This book teaches readers the fundamentals of innovation and reduces them to practice. It is a new, fresh look at learning and practicing innovation at the individual level, based on scientific knowledge and in the context of the 21st century. The book begins with an overview of “human-centered engineering,” and how understanding a client’s needs plays a direct part in both innovation and success. The second chapter focuses on an engineer’s training and education, entry level jobs, lab research, and finally overcoming corporate stagnation. A separate chapter on Innovation Methods focuses on design, lateral, and systems thinking, and the book ends with information on funding, as well as innovation in traditional engineering fields versus those that are “hot” and constantly changing. This book is appropriate for engineers and students from all disciplines and experience levels.
